Wahner first german amateur boxing world champion: 'madness'

Ornella wahner has achieved the greatest success in german women’s amateur boxing. The 25-year-old featherweight defeated sonia from india 4:1 in the final of the world championships in neu-dehli.

So wahner, who starts for tabea halle/saale, has conquered the first german gold medal in the women’s world championship history. The last german amateur men’s world champion was jack culcay nine years ago.

"That’s insane. World champion – i still can’t believe it. It’s an incredibly nice feeling to hear the national anthem," said the 25-year-old boxer, who trains with michael timm in schwerin. The 57 kilogram and 1.64 meter tall athlete also has a fub in berlin, she affirmed. "I lived there for ten years, my father and my friends live there, and I often go there."

Wahner impressed her opponent with an offensive fighting style. The 2011 world youth champion marched forward without pause, pelting the indian with volleys of blows. Despite the home advantage, the seven-centimeter taller rival hardly came out of defensive mode. "This was exactly our route. We knew we couldn’t let the inderin have any air. Ornella should permanently exert pressure," explained trainer timm and solemnly proclaimed: "for german boxing this title is a milestone. He gives the signal for the olympic games in tokyo."

But there was hardly any time for the celebration. The return flight to germany was already scheduled for the night. "It’s going to be a great flight," predicted timm. His protege wants to make up for the extensive victory party in his home country. She was already looking ahead to the olympics in tokyo: "my goal there is to win a medal."

With this goal nadine apetz also wants to go to japan. The 32-year-old from colonia won bronze in the welterweight category (up to 69 kg). It had already succeeded in doing so at the previous world cup in 2016. Timm: "she is also one of the medal candidates in tokyo."The german boxing federation returns home with its best world championship record ever.
